A Late-Summer Reset

Finding Our Way Back to Routine Before Fall Arrives

There is something about the end of summer that feels a little like standing in a doorway.

Outside, the days are still unmistakably summer. The afternoons are hot, the garden is a little overgrown, and there are tomatoes on the counter waiting to be used. But every now and then, there is a morning that feels just a touch different, a little quieter, a little cooler and you remember that another season is waiting just around the corner.

This year, I think I’m ready for it.

Summer was full around here. Really full.

What started with every intention of lingering over garden projects, seasonal recipes, weekend adventures, and the summer series I had begun sharing here quickly gave way to one of the busiest stretches of the year for our landscaping business.

And somewhere along the way, Knockout Living Co. went quiet.

There wasn’t a grand decision to take the summer off. There wasn’t even a proper “I’ll be back soon.” Life simply got busy, and the days that I thought would have room for writing were filled with work, watering the garden, getting dinner on the table, packing a suitcase here and there, and trying to enjoy a little bit of summer in between.

At first, I felt like I needed to catch up.

Finish the posts I had planned. Share everything I’d missed. Somehow pick up exactly where I’d left off.

But that’s the funny thing about seasons: they keep moving whether we’re ready or not.

So rather than trying to catch up with summer, I’m choosing to meet life where it is now.

And right now, that looks a lot like a reset.

Returning to a Rhythm

Summer has a wonderful way of loosening the schedule.

Dinner happens a little later. Weekends fill up. Vacations interrupt routines in the best possible way. There are nights when something simple eaten outside counts as dinner and mornings when the to-do list can wait just a little longer.

But eventually, I start craving rhythm again.

Not a perfectly color-coded schedule or an ambitious list of new habits. Just the small routines that make everyday life run a little more smoothly.

For me, that starts in the kitchen.

I’ve been returning to planning our meals before the week begins, stocking the refrigerator with ingredients that can become more than one meal, and making breakfast at home instead of figuring it out once the day is already underway.

There’s something surprisingly luxurious about opening the refrigerator on a busy Tuesday and knowing dinner is already halfway figured out.

And that’s really what affordable luxury has always meant to me.

It isn’t necessarily the expensive thing.

Sometimes luxury is fresh sheets at the end of a long day. It’s herbs cut from the garden instead of another trip to the grocery store. It’s drinking coffee from the cup you love instead of taking it with you togo. It’s having dinner planned before five o’clock.

It’s creating small pockets of ease in everyday life.

This season, I’m trying to create a few more of those.

Taking Stock of the Garden

The garden is going through its own transition.

By late summer, it isn’t the perfectly hopeful garden of spring.

It’s a little wild.

You can plan, amend the soil, water faithfully, and read every growing guide you can find, and nature will still have an opinion of its own.

So instead of looking at the garden and seeing everything that needs to be cleaned up, I’m trying to look at what it taught me.

I’m harvesting what’s left, clearing things as they’re finished, and slowly making room for fall.

Seed trays are making an appearance. Cooler-weather vegetables are beginning their turn. And after months of trying to keep everything alive in the heat, there is something hopeful about planting again.

The garden doesn’t need to be completely finished with one season before beginning the next.

Maybe we don’t either.

Letting Home Shift Slowly

I’m not quite ready for pumpkins everywhere.

Maybe it’s because it’s still very much summer outside our windows, but I’ve never felt the need to rush from one season into the next simply because the calendar says September.

Instead, I like letting fall arrive slowly.

Dried hydrangeas clipped from the garden and brought inside in a favorite textured vase.

A candle lit a little earlier in the evening.

The return of a soft throw blanket to the sofa.

A bowl of seasonal fruit on the counter.

Dinner simmering on the stove instead of cooking on the grill.

In the kitchen, I’ve been keeping things just as simple. A large vase of hydrangeas from the garden, fruit piled into this pedestal bowl, and a candle are really all the seasonal change the room needs. I like having everything loosely gathered on a wooden tray so it feels collected rather than decorated.

Nothing about it necessarily says fall. It just feels a little warmer, a little more layered, and right for this in-between time of year.

These tiny changes cost very little, but they can completely change the way a home feels.

I like to look around the house first before buying something new for a season. Moving a vase from one room to another, bringing out a wooden serving board, changing the stems on the table, or layering in something with a little more texture can often give a room that seasonal feeling without redecorating it.

A beautiful home doesn’t have to constantly be filled with new things.

Sometimes it simply needs to be noticed again.

Making Room for What’s Ahead

Perhaps that’s what this late-summer reset is really about.

Not reinventing everything.

Just noticing what needs a little attention.

The garden.

The kitchen.

The house.

Our routines.

And, apparently, this little corner of the internet.

There is plenty I’m looking forward to sharing here in the coming weeks.

The garden will be shifting into fall. There are recipes I’ve been making on repeat and a few seasonal ones I want to try. There are home projects waiting for cooler weather, along with travel, weekend adventures, and plenty of inspiration I’ve collected along the way.

And soon, there will be a suitcase packed again.

But this time, I’m not creating an ambitious list of everything I need to share before I go.

I’m simply starting here.

At the end of a busy summer.

With a slightly overgrown garden, a refrigerator stocked for the week, a house that is ready to slowly transition to fall, and a renewed appreciation for the ordinary routines that make home feel good.

Maybe a reset doesn’t require a new year, a new season, or even a Monday.

Maybe sometimes it simply begins when we decide we’re ready.

And I think I am.

Here’s to the season in between and finding a little more beauty, ease, and intention in the everyday.
